Can you get a wall print on brick?

Yes, even on rough brick with deep joints. Using a print in a vaulted cellar, we show how it works, what makes it difficult and how long it takes.

Can you get a wall print on brick?

Brick is one of the most beautiful surfaces there is, and one of the hardest to print on. The bricks are never completely flat, the joints sit deeper than the brick and no two bricks share the same colour. Wallpaper and film usually give up here; a wall print does not. The ink lands on the brick itself, so the relief stays visible through the print. Up close you see every brick; from a distance you read a single image that belongs to the wall. We show how that works in practice with a recent project: a niche in the vaulted cellar of the Oosterluys wine estate.

What makes brick difficult

A brick wall is never flat. At Oosterluys we therefore printed about 2 cm from the wall, so the print head could not touch a protruding brick anywhere. The joints sit deeper than the bricks, but the printer covered them without problems: the image is there too. Because the printer works further from the wall, it is slower than on a flat surface. This 1.22 x 1.40 m print took about an hour.

White or bare brick?

You can print on both. At Oosterluys the client had the red brick of the niche painted white beforehand. We printed on that white surface, without an extra white ink underlayer. A white base gives the brightest colours. Bare brick works too, but then the colour of the brick becomes part of the image.

Fine details stay legible

The design shows a bottle of Charming Bubbles being poured. The bottle label carries small text, and it stays sharp, even where it crosses a joint. The letters of the logo follow the relief of each brick.

How the project went

The design came from the client's graphic designer. We supplied template files with the exact dimensions and margins, so the artwork fitted from the start. We then printed on site, directly on the wall, at 2 cm distance because of the uneven brick. After about an hour the print was done. No protective coating was applied.

In closing

A brick wall does not have to be a limitation. Considering a print on brick? Send us a photo of the wall and what you have in mind, and you will receive a tailored price.
